This year I have been amazed at the amount of boot-calves
my company has altered.
Having trouble finding boots that fit your calf?
Have them altered.
This type of alteration requires a highly skilled craftsman.
Because of this I recommend you search for a shop that has a reputation
for doing superior work. It may cost a little more but it's well worth
it when you consider the difference; one craftsman will have the boot
looking the way you wanted it, the other may totally destroy it.
Letting out the calf . (adding a gusset.):
The fitting process:
This process is the same for boots with or without zippers. With the boot OFF,
the seam and liner are cut open with a razor sharp knife. The cut should stop
slightly above the counter. The counter is the rigid area that keeps the shape
of the heel. At this point, the customer puts the boot on for measurement.
The craftsman will ask you to hold the two sides of the split calf and pull them
upward and taunt around your leg. You will see a long "V" shaped area which is
where the gusset will be installed. In order to keep the correct size, starting from
the bottom of the open area, the craftsman will apply a piece of masking tape around
the entire leg (including the area that was split.) Expect the tape to stick to the part
of your leg where the gusset is going to be. As you go up the leg he will add another strip
of tape every two inches. One last strip of tape will be added to the top of the calf.
The fitting process is now completed, now comes the "sticky" part (ha, ha).
The customer must carefully remove the boot without disturbing the tape.
TAKE YOUR TIME during this process, it is crucial in keeping the correct fit.
When the boot is removed, the craftsman will be able to see where he/she
will need to add the gusset and size.
Adding the alteration:
At this point, the craftsman will take a piece of leather that matches the boot,
line it and add it to the area that has been marked by the tape.
There are several tricks of the trade that he/she will use
(depending how the boot was made) in order to get the finished boot to
1look like the gusset was part of the original style of the boot.
A superior craftsman will have the boot streamlined and hugging the leg
as though it was custom-made for you.
